This included making pieces inspired by historic European furniture, like the popular French Provincial–style Touraine bedroom and dining group that borrowed its curves from Louis XV-era furniture. This focus on design, which few other furniture companies were committing to at the time, allowed Drexel to respond to a variety of new and traditional tastes. One of Drexel’s early innovations was to employ staff designers, something the company initiated in the 1930s. The first offerings from Drexel Furniture were simple: a bed, washstand and bureau all crafted from native oakwood, sold as a bedroom suite for $14.50. In 1903, in the small town of Drexel in the foothills of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains, six partners came together to found a company that would become one of the country’s leading furniture producers. In 1968 they were purchased, and Drexel Enterprises became Drexel Heritage Furnishings, Inc. The 1960s had them adding industrial and hospitality furniture to their lines. They acquired other furniture companies along the way and by the late 1950s employed 2300 workers. ![]() By 1950 under the younger Huffman’s leadership Drexel had grown from a small factory to a leader in furniture manufacturing. Sam Huffman, one of the initial founders, managed the enterprise until his death in 1935 when his son, Robert O. They’re going to be wonderful in your bedroom as nightstands or one on each side of your sofa in the living room hosting a gorgeous pair of table lamps. They have two drawers featuring brass plated escutcheons with a lovely keyhole design. There are even faux saw marks in the grain which are indicative of the “weatherwood” finish. What have we here? They are comprised of square frames covered in a gorgeous wood veneer with a unique rather distressed finish. Please see photos and zoom in for details. One cabinet is slightly lighter possibly due to sun fade. Both are hardly noticeable to the naked eye especially due to the “weatherwood” rather distressed original finish. The top of one cabinet has a tiny splinter in the edge of the veneer on the front groove and minute bubbling of the veneer edge in that same groove. Beautiful condition, keeping in mind that these are vintage and not new so will have signs of use and wear.
